當遭受嚴重創傷或巨大衝擊的時候–包括車禍、虐待、流產、墮胎、暴力、喪親、手術、嗑藥等–有時會導致靈魂遺失(Soul loss)，也就是因為過於痛苦，部分靈體受創，好像破碎般的脫離身體。離開的靈體帶著部分的創傷記憶，這會使得當事人事後得以忘記創傷的種種細節，然而，也因為靈體不完整，使得日後的生活中好像無所憑依，無精打采，憂鬱傾向。一般來說，越嚴重的創傷和衝擊，靈魂遺失越嚴重，也越容易導致慢性疾病。在心理學上來說，這是為了保護自己，痛苦的回憶被壓抑到潛意識深處，以至於失憶。表面上看來好像忘記這些創傷，但這些創傷仍留在潛意識中等待主人重新憶起並療癒，這種過程稱為靈魂修復(Soul retrieval)，也就是重新憶起破碎的回憶片段，重新把它們組裝回去，修復靈體，人格完整。收驚是中國民俗上對靈魂遺失的傳統療法，而這個花精同樣提供靈魂修復的功效，幫助我們尋回失去的片段，讓內在小孩完整。不僅適用於幼年的靈魂遺失，也適用於成年後經歷的創傷。
