Kyanite was named in 1789 by Abraham Werner, deriving from the Greek word κύανος, meaning "deep blue." Its appearance is quite distinctive, often showing well-defined prismatic or blade-like forms. The hardness varies significantly with direction—ranging from as low as 4.5 in one direction to as high as 7 in another.
