Lepidolite was first discovered in 1861 by Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff. Initially named "Lilalite" for its lilac color, it was later renamed "Lepidolite," derived from the Greek word "lepidos," meaning "scale," due to its scaly appearance.

Lithium is rare in nature, and Lepidolite, with its high lithium content, has become an important source of this element.
